This research project involves a core group of leading philosophers and theologians from the Centre for Philosophy of Religion at Heythrop College, University of London, augmented with a distinguished team of external contributors, and supported by the work of a post-doctoral research fellow. By approaching the question of religious understanding from three complementary angles, its relation to our understanding of the concept of nature, its relation to “involved” humane forms of understanding, and its relationship to patterns of explanation found in other areas of human inquiry, the investigators hope to establish an intellectually robust framework which not only clarifies the distinctive nature of religious understanding, but also shows how religious understanding, so far from being pushed to the sidelines in contemporary philosophy, can occupy a secure and central place in our grasp of the significance of human existence and its relation to the reality of which we are a part.
